This Communication Practice Test Is Built for Real CNA Judgment

Communication on the CNA exam isn’t just about talking. It’s about how you receive information and share it with the healthcare team. The exam tests whether you can adapt your style to meet a resident’s specific needs and if you know what information must be reported immediately.

This practice set helps you master essential communication strategies, such as using “I” statements, identifying non-verbal signs of pain, communicating with residents who have dementia, and distinguishing between objective and subjective data in your medical charting.

Common Questions We Always Get

Communication questions are usually about clarity and “what to report.” These FAQs help you spot the safest CNA answer fast.

Reporting and recording (charting), verbal vs. non-verbal cues, communicating with impaired residents (hearing/vision/dementia), and therapeutic communication techniques.

Objective data is what you see, hear, feel, or smell (e.g., a rash). Subjective data is what the resident tells you they feel (e.g., “I have a headache”).

Face the resident directly, speak clearly in a normal tone (don’t shout), and ensure there is good lighting so they can see your face and lips.

Remain calm, listen to their concerns without getting defensive, and try to identify the underlying cause while ensuring both your safety and theirs.

Using medical jargon with a resident or failing to report a significant change in a resident’s condition to the nurse immediately.

Use short, simple sentences, ask “yes” or “no” questions, and allow the resident plenty of time to process and respond without interrupting.

Choose the answer that follows this priority:

  1. Resident Safety: Does this address an immediate physical need?
  2. Professionalism: Is the tone respectful and appropriate?
  3. Accuracy: Does it provide clear, factual information to the nurse?
